Say, you were given the choice of getting either a garage door remote or keypad! Which one would you choose? Which method would you find more convenient for getting access to your electric garage door – hence, your home?

Let’s face it. The automatic garage door is the new front door. 9 out of 10 times, the overhead door is used for the comings and goings of the family. And so, when it comes to choosing the means of entry, you need to consider plenty of things – security, safety, convenience, budget, just to name a few. Don’t you?

And there’s a dilemma when it comes to choosing between garage door keypads and remote clickers.

On one side, garage door opener remotes are tried and tested.

On the other side, keypads provide some freedom – one less thing to carry with you, one less thing to worry about.

So, what would you choose?

A garage door remote control?

garage door remote controlWe are all habituated to using garage door remotes. And it’s often hard to let go of something you know well; of something you’ve been using practically your whole life. Now, if you add to that the fact that technology evolves, that new really good remote controls come out, one wonders the obvious. Why abandon the tried and tested for the unknown?

The advantage of garage door clickers is that they are portable, often visor mount, compatible with many opener brands and models. And there are universal garage door remotes too. There are small and larger options, and they have at least two buttons – hence, you can program two openers.

And then, if you lose or break it, you can easily get a garage door remote replacement, while programming it is easy and the cost is rather affordable – it won’t break your bank.

But here’s the thing. Since they are portable, they may be lost or stolen. And you have to carry the remote with you, whether you go jogging or shopping. And then, the children may get their hands on it, play with the garage door, put their safety at risk. And if you lose it or your car is stolen, you will not have access to your home but the thief will. Clearly, there are disadvantages too.

OR, a garage door keypad?

garage door keypadWireless garage door keypads are not the new guys in town. They’ve been around for quite some time, although they didn’t manage to break the dominance of the remote clickers. And that’s really strange if you consider their numerous advantages.

Their biggest advantage? The way they work. Mount on the wall right outside the overhead garage door and activated by only entering a code, keypads are extremely convenient. They are easy to use. And the best part? There’s no need for you to carry anything with you. You go jogging and walking the dog with the pockets empty. No concerns of carrying the remote and fearing you may drop it. Heck. You don’t even have to carry your house key with you.

The only thing you are required to do with keypads is to remember your code. And the good thing is that you can create codes for the whole family, relatives or visitors too. Codes can easily change and be erased. And so, you don’t worry about anyone’s access, about getting locked out, about your security, about losing the remote or the key. You don’t worry – period.

So, let’s vote: garage door keypad or remote? I’d bet you chose the former, hands down.
